As vinyl makes it’s miraculous comeback we’re seeing new innovation with records and players to the point where you can now make your records float as you play them.

Have you ever wondered how your vinyl would sound in zero gravity? Ask Jack White and he’d probably tell you but soon you’ll be able to find out for yourself from the comfort of your own home.

Okay whilst it not make a difference to the music playback, at least not an audible one, you have to admit how cool it  looks to have a floating turntable. MAG-LEV Audio is a new player currently on Kickstarter and is the first turntable that makes your records float as you play them.

The turntable has been meticulously designed so that the tonearm and cartridge are positioned to play records in the air accurately with crystal sound and no damage. The drive system uses unique patented technology to create levitation magnetically. The most incredible part of the MAG-LEV is how it still precisely rotates the same as any turntable. You can even choose between 33,3 RPM and 45 RPM.

I’m sure you’re wondering how it can maintain the same spot every time, especially with the fragility and complexity of playing a vinyl record perfectly. The MAG-LEV uses platter feet to rest the platter on when you aren’t using it, and they will automatically retract when you begin using the turntable.

Whilst this record player is fascinating it clearly isn’t for the casual consumer, or even the audiophile. Whilst it looks incredible and is sure to blow everyone who sees it away, with the price starting at a discount of $840 on their Kickstarter page and a RRP of $1,490 it’s a high cost novelty. That’s not to say it doesn’t serve a function, it just doesn’t improve on cheaper turntables that can probably play vinyl at a better quality, like Sony’s new hi-res player that comes in at under $500.

It’s an impressive gimmick but a gimmick none-the-less. If I had $1,500 to spare however…

If you want to buy one for yourself or help support MAG-LEV achieve their dreams you can from their Kickstarter page. Estimated delivery is August 2017.
